OK. I get it. Lesson learned: never touch a prop that isn’t yours… right, @kendoll94?! Thanks, @tessa_tora. 🐭😜

"Chasing Quetzal"

Process

1. Started with a study from an aerial view of clouds.

Rough and dirty, laying in the values making sure it reads.

2-4

Cleaning it up, more detail (Clouds are super tedious btw!)

5

I was getting bored so I decided to make it into a scene and drew a flying sub thing.

6

Got real nitty gritty with cleaning up the clouds, I wanted them to look clean so I went in with a round brush at full opacity and about half flow. With the color picker as my best friend I color picked areas of the similar color and went over them in circular motion with the round brush. This took forever. BUT I got the result I wanted, so it’s alright.

And if you’re wandering how can painting clouds with a hard brush keep them fluffy, is because I exploited one of the properties of edge softness, which is value by having soft transitions in the fluffy areas. Edges have various properties which can be exploited instead of simply going in with a hard or soft brush. I’m still learning about them, and will probably forever continue to do so. Edges are like that mysterious family member that is super rich and everyone wants to get to know, but few even have his phone number.

The ship is kind of just hanging out, it should be doing something. hmmm. I played around with the other element and got ideas from flocks of birds to Laputa. Ended up liking a dragon shape because it gave a pretty interesting composition.

8-9

adding values to the giant snake

10

Well, I skipped a few steps here. I decided to make it into Quetzalcoatl because he is my favorite mythological god, I painted the face like a snake deer, added the fur/feathers, and played with its color curves like a million times. As you can see the final color looks very different from this weird pink fleshy thing.
